AVID Elementary at Sunflower School
Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, is a program for helping students become college ready. El Centro Elementary School District, and Sunflower in particular, are dedicated to preparing our students with the tools to make them successful students. AVID Elementary (AE) is the foundational component of AVID College Readiness System and supports AVID's mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for success in a global society.
AVID Elementary implementation resources, trainings and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through this mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams. We will teach the students to:
- Utilize organizational skills
- Instill student success skills
- Learn note taking skills
AVID students are working on two and three column notes to help them organize their learning. You can ask your child about the note taking strategy and how it works for them. We are improving our ability to use inquiry as a strategy and student discussion, as well as creating new and powerful questions to lead our learning is what we are focusing on.
AVID Elementary year 6! We are focusing this year on the components of WICOR- and adding to our bag of tricks. The students are encouraged to be masters of Communication and we look for opportunities to have them collaborate on rigorous tasks. Right now all our teachers have been trained at summer institute, with the exception of our new hires. We are committed to having the entire school work together as an AVID school.
